NGT seeks status of Gr Noida wetland mapping from govt

NOIDA: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) directed the UP state government on Monday to clarify the status of mapping of the Bil Akbarpur wetlands in Greater Noida, which has allegedly been encroached upon by real estate development projects. The UP state government had been issued orders earlier to undertake a joint exercise with various agencies for the preparation of a topographical map of the wetlands.

The mapping exercise had been ordered by the principal bench of the tribunal headed by chairperson Justice Swatanter Kumar after an application filed by environmental activists in the UP-NCR region last May alleged that encroachment of the wetlands was leading to an adverse effect on the area's wildlife. On Monday, the bench fixed February 11 as the final date to dispose of the case while directing the union Environment Ministry (MoEF) to follow instructions in this regard.

On Monday, the project proponent - alleged to have encroached upon the wetland - presented a map of the Bil Akbarpur area in Greater Noida that included the wetland. The NGT directed all parties in the case to ascertain the veracity of the layout map. "We direct all parties concerned to show and explain to the Tribunal on the next date of hearing as to whether the water bodies, their sources and impact on wildlife have been correctly described in the said layout map," said the order.

On Monday, the state government informed the tribunal that orders issued by it earlier had not been complied with.

Orders were issued on Monday for the presence of the senior officer of the concerned state government department at the next hearing date.
